The Heroes are back in Waterdeep, where they enjoy some downtime. They're contacted by a Zhentarim agent, Ryan Nightshade, who offers to buy the rights to Xonthal's Tower from them. After some bargaining, the Heroes agree.
Following the information obtained during the last Councl, the Heroes make contact with the Thayian embassy, to discuss a possible alliance. The Thayan ambassador, Nyh Ilmichh, is willing to introduce the Heroes to one of the Thayan Tarchions, but they will have to travel to Thay.
Before leaving, the Heroes entrust the Blue Dragon Mask to Lady Laeral Silverhand, then they teleport together with the ambassador to Nethwatch Keep, in Lapendrar, the Thayan region under the command of Tarchion Eseldra Yeth. There, they realize that Thayan customs may not be in line with their beliefs. The Thayans make extensive use of undead and living slaves, and the Tarchion herself is a vampire!
Yet, they're treated with the greatest respect, and their host welcomes them and seems willing to forge an alliance against the "rogue" Red Wizards that are helping the Cult of the Dragon. But during the second night of their visit, the Heroes experience terrible nightmares, during which a cabal of Red Wizards interrogate them brutally, resorting to intimidation and torture. The Heroes survive the dream, and apparently make an impression on the wizards.
The day after, Nyh comes to collect them, congratulating them for having sealed this alliance with the Tarchion. Once they've gathered their belongings, the ambassador teleports with them back to Waterdeep.
