The Heroes enjoy a tenday of rest, then they are summoned to the latest Council, where they're commended for their success at Xonthal's Tower and in Thay. Unfortunately, Lady Laeral reveal that the Blue Dragon Mask that they've recovered in Xonthal's Tower is a fake. It seems clear that the Masks are already gathered at the Well of Dragons, ready for the ritual that will bring Tiamat into the world. Still, the forces of good are holding the many fronts of this terrible war, and are gathering to bring a final assault against the Cult of the Dragon.
In the meanwhile, the Council tasks the Heroes with investigating the attacks of Fire Giants suffered by the supply lines to the north. Bands of monsters, led by a half-dragon giant, are destroying vital cargo needed for the war effort. Mundane investigation and magical divination have pin-pointed their lair among the Sword Mountains. As an additional help, the Harper duelist Rildinel Soargyl joins the party.
The Heroes travel north for a tenday; during their travels they come into contact with a few fire giants marauders, eventually reaching the entrance of the monsters' lair. By the shores of a lake inside an inactive volcano's caldera, they must slay a couple of Ettin and their hell hound pets, before making their way inside the hellish cave they were guarding.
